The Family Behind the Business: Julius and Sandra Britto of Attentive Home Care
By Justina Perry
This dynamic duo started their home care business in 1985 to offer care for elders in their homes. At the time, Sandra ran the business with her bouncing baby boy, who is now COO of the company. “He was born in the business,” Julius recalls. Then, when their daughter, Nia, was born she would also be joining Sandra in the day-to-day management of the family business. On nights and weekends, Julius would tend to the business operations since he worked full-time at the Federal court.
Julius’s mother’s former East Wareham beauty salon became their office. Julius explains that the idea for this business came as a suggestion from his own mother, a social worker, who identified a need in the community. At the start, they ran two divisions of the company. Eventually, due to Medicare reimbursement, they would close the certified division and continue with their private division.
In 2004, Attentive Home Care was born as they re-entered the market re-establishing many previous contracts as the team was so well-respected in the field. After a 27 year career in the federal court, Julius retired and focused on Attentive Home Care ever since. Julius serves as President of the Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey Association, Inc., which maintains and operates programs for the historical ship whose official home port is New Bedford, Massachusetts. Julius also serves on the board of the Massachusetts Council for Home Care Aide Services, which means this team is well-informed about best-practices for Covid-19.
Attentive Home Care is serving Swansea to Provincetown, working to allow clients to live with dignity in their home. They are always hiring supportive home health aides, certified nursing assistants, and personal companions -- and pay a competitive rate. Their caregivers are fully trained, insured, and background-checked, and they serve the elderly, disabled, and ailing. The sign at the front of their office reading, “Heroes work here,” rings true after front-line healthcare workers are now one full year into a pandemic.
The pair work surrounded by family and long-time staff running one of the leading home care agencies in the southeastern Massachusetts region. They are enjoying their new role as grandparents to their first grandson.
Julius’s advice for young entrepreneurs?
“If you let your morals drive you, you’ll always make the right decisions.”
