The Baker: The Science of Baking and Brandon Roderick

“Our Mission is producing artisan pastry and bread in a relaxing downtown setting.

The Baker: New Bedford (on 562 Pleasant St, New Bedford) is located in the heart of the city, and where the heartbeat of Black business entrepreneurship is burgeoning. “It’s always been a natural progression for me to own a business. I know that I want to have something I can call my own, and make my own decision for. I know that is frustrating, but it is a very nice spot to be in,” explains owner and culinary director, Brandon Roderick.

Brandon, a NBHS & Tufts alumni, decided that Bio Pre-Med was not for him after three years of college. “I have worked in restaurants since I was 16.” said Roderick, “I figured that I could combine my background of science and love of culinary arts, and it led me into baking.” After working for bakeries in Boston for six years, Roderick became a general manager in a bakery for experience. Finally in 2016, Brandon Roderick’s The Baker: New Bedford made its debut.

“I could remember the bank account ticking down, so we had to open a little too soon for my liking. But, the community really rallied behind The Baker and gave us the confidence needed to continue.” Since then, Roderick has been planning to expand the business. “That’s why I named it The Baker: New Bedford,” said Roderick. He was close to acquiring a building in a close town, but COVID-19 impeded the acquisition.

“My advice for future Black business owners is to make sure to have a strong support system,” said Roderick. “If you can’t take the wind in your face, then the top ain’t your place.” Roderick also advises future Black business owners to not be afraid of chance, risk and failure. “Some people said, ‘I don’t know if New Bedford is ready for a bakery.’ Then you come here on a Saturday morning, and see the line. You know that chances paid off.”

During Quarantine, The Baker is continuing to be successful and unlocking latent potential. At 562 Pleasant Street, you can find a classic linguiça pinroll and the innovative linguiça and cheese stuffed pretzel roll. “That separates us from people around us,” said Roderick.
